August Bank Holiday means only one thing in this part of the world… Brighton Mod Weekender! There’ll be scooters and Lambrettas galore driving down from London in honour of the 1950s and 60s Mod pilgrimages.
This year is extra special, with the 40th anniversary of Quadrophenia, the film that captured the “Mods and Rockers” legend and made stars of Phil Daniels and Leslie Ash. This weeks blog features brand new Autumn Winter 2019 gear inspired by the styles and subcultures of the Mod era. Take your pick!
Twin Tipped Polo Shirt by Fred Perry – £64.95
Where else to start than the most famous British subculture brand of them all: Fred Perry. This iconic polo shirt is as popular as ever – we’re not exaggerating when we say we’ve sold thousands of these in our 26-year history. You just can’t beat the sport-inspired design, soft pique cotton fabric and classic regular fit. Here’s three new colours for Autumn Winter 2019 season – Sunglow Yellow, Sky Blue and Ivy Green. Click here to explore the full M3600 colour range at Apache (all 20 of them!) with sizes ranging from Small to XXX Large.
Bomber Collar Pique Polo by Fred Perry – £65
Here’s an inspired twist on the classic Fred Perry polo, taking the famous twin tipped design but using a bomber-style collar instead. Visitors to Brighton Mod Weekender will see plenty of bomber collars on people’s jackets, but not many on a polo shirt! Like the M3600, it’s crafted from a divine 100% honeycomb pique cotton, keeping you cool and fresh all day long. Choose from three colours in Gunmetal Grey, Navy and Black in Medium to XX Large.
Hudson Cord Newsboy Cap by Failsworth – £30
Newsboy caps have a long, heritage-rich history. The name comes from old-timey America, when boys would cycle through the streets on their paper round shouting “Read All About It!…” Our favourite headwear brand Failsworth has put out two fantastic Newsboy style caps for Autumn Winter 2019, the first of which is this distinctive corduroy hat in Fawn and Navy. This season’s caps boast a pin-on badge with the Failsworth logo. We run two sizes in these: Medium (57cm) and Large (59cm).
Hudson 6 Piece Newsboy Cap by Failsworth – £40
The other Failsworth 6-panel Newsboy cap is made from 100% Abraham Moon British Wool, the sort of quality you’d expect from a brand with a 116-year history. This style of cap was famously worn by Jay Gatsby in the landmark novel The Great Gatsby, and of course by the Brummie gangsters in Peaky Blinders! Speaking of which, if you’re headed to the first ever Peaky Blinders Festival in Birmingham next month, don’t go without one of these caps! Available in Charcoal, Merlot and Petrol.
Two Tone Harrington – £80 / Check Harrington – £120
When it comes to Mod-inspired outerwear, only a Harrington jacket will do. We’re delighted to unveil two brand new Harrington Jackets for AW19 season from two of our favourite heritage brands. Ska and Soul’s jacket boasts a classic Royal Stewart interior lining, pop buttons on the front, plus a small funnel neck and ribbed cuffs to help keep the wind and rain out. Lyle & Scott’s version boast an all-over tartan check design in Navy and bottle green, a button neck, and two front pockets.
Jacquard Dot Polo (£50) & Houndstooth Polo (£45) by Trojan
Trojan is the fashion arm of Trojan Records, one of the most important music labels of the 1970s. Their ska, reggae and soul heritage is reflected in the vintage designs of their knitted polos, two of which we’ve featured here. Mod culture embraced both jacquard dot patterns (left) and the bold Houndstooth weave (right) – simply take your pick! The Jacquard Polo features a quarter zip design, with the Houndstooth polo boasting a classic 2-button placket. Sizes range from Medium to XX Large in both.
